On Board Announcements

Keeping passengers informed and assisting the visually disabled with announcements of the next stop and current route is the function of the RAPID on board announcement system.

A next stop display can be fitted to each bus together with internal audio and external audio.

The next stop display is typically a single line, 16 character LED (Light Emitting Diode) display mounted on the roof in the centre aisle of the bus in line with the rear of the driver alcove.

Next-stop audio and text files are stored on the bus. The system monitors the bus as it travels to stops along its route and then initiates messages based on the stop, time to stop and departure from the stop.

Each stop message can have a number of linked messages to announce attractions associated with that stop. Typical messages might be ‘the next stop is’ ‘Riversdale St’ ‘stop here for’ ‘shopping’ ‘Train to city’ ‘cinemas’. The messages are natural voice messages designed for clarity in a bus environment.

The next stop message is removed from the display as the bus arrives at the stop.

External announcements of the bus route and destination help waiting passengers identify if this is their bus. For example a waiting passenger might hear ‘This is the route 17 service to Belconnen’.

The system is fully automatic requiring no driver intervention.
